How to Book Your Theory Test
Six steps from provisional licence to confirmed slot. Always at gov.uk and never a penny more than £23.
Get a UK provisional driving licence
Apply at gov.uk for £34 online or £43 by post. You need a valid provisional with the correct entitlement before you can book a theory test. Allow up to 3 weeks for the photocard to arrive.
Go to gov.uk/book-theory-test
This is the only official booking site. Check the URL carefully and ignore paid search ads from look-alike sites. The page is run by the DVSA and the price shown is £23.
Choose your test centre
Over 200 DVSA centres across England, Scotland and Wales. Quieter rural centres typically have shorter waits. The test is identical at every centre.
Pick a date and time
Weekday morning slots are easiest to book at short notice. Saturday and evening slots fill first. You can change your theory booking free of charge up to 3 clear working days before the test.
Pay £23 by debit or credit card
The DVSA charges £23 with no booking fee. You will receive a confirmation email with your reference number; print it or screenshot it for the day.
Receive your booking reference
Save the email. You will need your provisional licence (photocard, original, not a copy) plus the reference on test day. Photo ID alone is not enough.

Waiting Times in 2026
Theory test waits are dramatically shorter than the practical test. Most candidates can book within a fortnight; rural centres often have next-week availability.
| Region | Typical wait | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| London / South East | 2-3 weeks | Saturday slots scarce |
| Midlands | 1-2 weeks | Larger centres book up faster |
| North West / North East | 1-2 weeks | Good evening availability |
| Scotland (excl. Highlands) | 1-2 weeks | Edinburgh and Glasgow can be tight |
| Wales | 1-3 weeks | Cardiff slower than Swansea or Newport |
| Rural / island centres | often this week | Worth a longer drive to save weeks |
Wait times are approximate ranges based on DVSA reports and learner forums; check the booking calendar for live availability.
Common third-party booking traps
- Sponsored Google ads that mimic GOV.UK colours and crown logos. Check the URL ends in .gov.uk.
- Booking-assistant sites that charge £10-15 on top of the £23. They book through the same DVSA system you can use yourself for free.
- Cancellation-finder services that promise quicker test slots for a fee. The DVSA does not partner with any third-party site for prioritised slots.
- Social-media sellers offering tests at "discounted" prices. The DVSA never offers discounts; the fee is £23 for everyone.
FAQ
FAQ 1How old do I have to be to book?
17 for car (16 if you receive enhanced PIP mobility), 16 for moped (cat AM), 17 for category A1 motorcycle. You can book the theory up to 3 months before your birthday but you cannot sit the test until on or after the eligible date.
FAQ 2What ID do I need on the day?
Your UK photocard provisional driving licence, original. A copy or photo on your phone is not accepted. You will be turned away and forfeit your fee if you arrive without it.
FAQ 3Can my driving instructor book for me?
Yes, for the theory test. The 2026 self-booking rules (from 12 May 2026) apply only to the car practical test; DVSA guidance states they do not apply to theory tests. Whoever books will need your provisional licence number and an email address you can access.
FAQ 4Can I book the theory test before I have my provisional?
No. You need a valid provisional driving licence number to book. Apply at gov.uk first; the photocard takes around 1-3 weeks to arrive.
FAQ 5How many times can I change my booking?
There is no published limit on theory test amendments; each change must be made at least 3 clear working days before the test. The two-change cap from 31 March 2026 applies to car practical test bookings, not theory.
FAQ 6Are theory tests cheaper at certain centres?
No. The DVSA fee is £23 at every centre. If a site shows a different price, it is a third-party reseller charging a markup.
