What to Expect on Theory Test Day

A complete walkthrough from arrival to results. No surprises on the day.

Before You Go

Bring

  • UK photocard provisional driving licence
  • That is all. Nothing else is required.

Do not bring into the test room

  • Mobile phone (goes in locker)
  • Smart watch or any watch
  • Bags, books, notes
  • Food or drinks
  • Headphones or earbuds

Arrive at least 15 minutes early. If you arrive after your scheduled start time, you will be turned away and you lose the £23 fee.

Arrival and Check-in

At reception, you show your provisional licence for ID verification. Your photo and signature are checked against the card. You will be given a locker key for your phone and belongings. Once verified, you are shown to a workstation in the test room.

The test room has individual workstations with partitions between them. You get a short tutorial on how to use the touch screen before the test begins. You can practice with sample questions during this tutorial.

Part 1: Multiple Choice

Questions

50

Time limit

57 min

Pass mark

43/50

  • Questions are drawn from a bank of approximately 700
  • Each question has four possible answers; choose one
  • Some questions use a "select all that apply" format
  • You can flag questions and return to them before submitting
  • A countdown timer shows your remaining time
  • Most people finish with 15-20 minutes to spare

The Break

After the multiple choice section, you get an optional 3-minute break. You stay at your workstation. You cannot leave the room, use your phone, or speak to other candidates. The break is a chance to take a breath before hazard perception.

Part 2: Hazard Perception

Video clips

14

Developing hazards

15

Pass mark

44/75

  • Each clip is about one minute long, showing a real driving scenario
  • Click the mouse when you spot a developing hazard
  • One clip contains two scoreable hazards (you will not know which one)
  • Score 0-5 per hazard depending on how early you click
  • Clicking excessively on a single clip triggers the anti-cheat system and scores 0
  • You cannot pause, rewind, or replay the clips

For a detailed guide to scoring and strategy, see our hazard perception guide.

Getting Your Results

After the hazard perception section, you return to reception. Your results are printed immediately. You receive a letter before you leave the building.

If you pass

You receive a theory test pass certificate number. This is valid for 2 years. You need this number to book your practical driving test. There is no physical certificate to carry; the number is enough.

If you fail

Your results letter shows your score for each section and breaks down which topic areas you scored poorly in. Use this to target your revision. You can rebook immediately but must wait at least 3 working days.

Theory Certificate Validity

Your theory test pass is valid for 2 years from the date you pass. You must pass your practical driving test within this window. There are no extensions. If the certificate expires, you must retake and pass the full theory test before booking a practical test.

With practical test waiting times of 15-22 weeks in many areas, book your practical test as soon as possible after passing the theory. Do not wait until you feel "ready" to drive; book early and use the waiting time for lessons.

Test Day FAQ

What should I bring to the theory test?

Just your UK photocard provisional driving licence. That is the only thing you need. You do not need a printout of your booking confirmation, though it does not hurt to have one on your phone in case of any reception queries.

Can I go to the toilet during the test?

Yes, but the timer keeps running. Raise your hand and an invigilator will escort you. Try to use the toilet before the test starts. Most people do not need a break during the 57-minute test.

What happens if I am late?

If you arrive after your scheduled start time, you will be turned away. You lose the £23 fee with no refund. There is no grace period. Aim to arrive at least 15 minutes early.

Can I wear a watch during the test?

No. All watches (including non-smart watches) must be stored in your locker. A countdown timer is shown on your workstation screen, so you do not need a watch to track time.

What if I have a disability or special need?

The DVSA offers extensive support including extra time, voiceover, BSL interpreter, and larger text. These must be arranged when you book. See our special needs guide for full details.

How soon can I retake if I fail?

You must wait at least 3 working days before retaking. There is no limit on the number of attempts, but each one costs £23. Use the results letter to identify weak areas and revise them before rebooking.
