Motorcycle Theory Test Cost: £23 in 2026
Same fee as the car test, same format, same pass mark. Different question bank, different rider-specific content.
How Motorcycle Theory Differs from Car
Same 50 multiple-choice questions, same 14 hazard-perception clips, same £23 fee. The difference is the topic mix in Part 1.
Bike-specific topics covered
- Filtering through traffic at low speed
- Road positioning for cornering and visibility
- Protective clothing, helmets and high-vis
- Counter-steering and braking on a bike
- Carrying a pillion passenger or luggage
- Restrictions for learner riders on motorways
Hazard perception is identical
Bikes and cars use the same hazard-perception clip library. Practice on the same DVSA clips that car learners use; there is no separate motorcycle hazard-perception course. Read the hazard-perception guide.

| 2. Theory test | £23 | 50 MCQ + 14 hazard clips |
| 3. Module 1 practical (off-road) | £15.50 | Manoeuvres on a closed circuit |
| 4. Module 2 practical (on-road) | £75 / £88.50 | 40-min ride, weekday or evening rate |
FAQ
FAQ 1Is the motorcycle theory test easier than the car test?
Statistically yes; the 2024/25 pass rate was 68.1% versus 44.9% for cars. Riders tend to be older and have more road experience. The questions are no harder, just bike-focused.
FAQ 2Can I use my car theory pass for a motorcycle?
No. Each vehicle category needs its own theory pass. If you already hold a full car licence you still need to take the motorcycle theory test before taking Module 2.
FAQ 3How long is the motorcycle theory pass valid?
Two years from the pass date, identical to the car test. Both Module 1 and Module 2 must be passed within that two-year window or you take theory again.
FAQ 4Do I need CBT before booking the theory test?
No. You can book and take the theory test without CBT. You do need a valid provisional licence with category A entitlement (granted automatically with a UK provisional). CBT is required before riding on the road and before Module 1.
FAQ 5Is the theory fee different for A1, A2 or A?
No. All three motorcycle categories share the same £23 theory test. The licence category you ride under depends on your age and the size of bike used in the practical, not the theory.
