Dyslexia Support

Dyslexia is one of the most common reasons for requesting accommodations. The DVSA offers several options:

  • Extra time - up to double the standard time (114 minutes instead of 57 for multiple choice)
  • Voiceover - questions read aloud through headphones so you can listen as well as read
  • Modified colours - change the screen background colour to reduce visual stress

You will need evidence of your dyslexia. Accepted evidence includes a letter from your school or college, a GP letter, or a report from a BDA-approved online dyslexia screening. An Educational Psychologist report is not required; simpler evidence is sufficient.

Deaf and Hearing Impaired

Two types of BSL support are available at no extra cost:

On-screen BSL

A BSL interpreter appears as a video overlay on your screen, signing each question and the answer options. Available at all test centres. No evidence of hearing difficulty needed.

Face-to-face BSL

A BSL interpreter attends the test centre in person. This must be arranged at least 3 weeks in advance when you book your test. No evidence of hearing difficulty is required, but availability depends on interpreter scheduling.

Visual Impairments

The workstation can display larger text and modified colour schemes. If you cannot use a screen at all, a voiceover option reads questions and answers aloud through headphones. For severe visual impairments, a reader can be arranged to read the questions to you in person. Note: you still need sufficient vision to take the hazard perception clips, which are video-based.

Learning Disabilities

In addition to extra time and voiceover, candidates with learning disabilities can request an extended practice session before the test. This gives you longer to familiarise yourself with the workstation and touch screen. A letter from a doctor, school, or support worker confirming your condition is typically sufficient evidence.

Physical Disabilities

All DVSA theory test centres have wheelchair access. Adjustable workstations are available. If you have limited mobility or need specific seating arrangements, inform the test centre when you book. Most centres can accommodate a wide range of physical needs with advance notice.

English as an Additional Language

The theory test is available in English and Welsh. A voiceover in some other languages is available for certain test types. You can bring an interpreter for some tests, but this must be arranged in advance. The DVSA recommends checking what language support is available for your specific test type when you book.

How to Request Support

  1. When you book your test, tell the DVSA what support you need. You can do this online or by phone (0300 200 1122).
  2. Provide evidence where required. A letter from your GP, school, or support worker is usually sufficient. Post it to DVSA or email to [email protected].
  3. Book early. Some accommodations (especially face-to-face interpreters) need time to arrange. Book at least 3 weeks in advance.
  4. Confirm with the test centre a few days before your test to ensure your accommodations are set up.

Special Needs FAQ

Can I get extra time on the theory test?

Yes. Up to double the standard time is available for candidates with dyslexia, learning disabilities, or other conditions that affect reading speed. You need to provide evidence (GP letter, school letter, or approved screening report) and request extra time when you book.

Is BSL support available?

Yes. Both on-screen BSL video overlay and face-to-face BSL interpreters are available at no extra cost. On-screen BSL is available at all centres. Face-to-face interpreters need to be arranged at least 3 weeks in advance.

Does the DVSA charge extra for accommodations?

No. All special needs support is provided free of charge. The test fee remains £23 regardless of what accommodations you need.

What evidence do I need for dyslexia support?

A letter from your school or college, a GP letter, or a report from a BDA-approved online dyslexia screening. You do not need a full Educational Psychologist assessment. The evidence just needs to confirm your condition.

Can I get support if English is not my first language?

Voiceover in some languages is available for certain test types. You may also be able to bring your own interpreter, arranged in advance. Check with the DVSA when booking to see what language support is available for your specific test.
